Bus Transport

Students who live inside the city boundary and who wish to use bus transport have to pay for the service. Generally these are public routes, although in one or two cases this service is combined with a rural school bus route.

Students who live outside the city boundary (4.8km from the school) are entitled to free bus transport on rural routes, which arrive at James Hargest via trans-shipment points on Queens Drive, Racecourse Road or Chesney Street. Otatara students travel direct on a Hargest only bus.

Information about specific pick-up and drop-off times at any point along the route can best be obtained direct from the bus company. (McDermott's).
Mr Pannett at James Hargest is the liaison person for all bus matters, and is happy to help with any queries.

House Competitions

Everyone at Hargest belongs to a house, either Watson (blue), Menzies (green), Thompson (red) or Hamilton (yellow). The house competition involves athletics, house choirs, swimming sports, cross country and public speaking.

The elected house captains also continue the rivalry with lunch-time competitions in activities like volleyball, basketball, tug-of-war and handball.

Extension Activities

GATE

GATE began at James Hargest College in 1999. there have been many factors that have influenced the creation of this programme including:

  • student input
  • educational research from both new zealand and overseas
  • programmes already developed in other schools
  • feedback from "the knowledge wave" conference
  • southland business community

as a result, jhc has a unique co-educational programme that gives our students every opportunity to be leaders in their field of endeavour. approximately 100 students may be involved in the gate programme in any particular year.

the gate programme is designed to encompass all definitions of giftedness. it recognises potential and actual giftedness in

  • general intellectual ability
  • specific academic aptitude
  • creativity
  • leadership
  • psychomotor ability

students with high, general intellectual ability and students with specific talents are offered programmes which enrich and extend our students. it works in conjunction with many extension opportunities that the regular classroom provides. students attend different workshops for a period of time, usually once a week for six to eight weeks.
