Relationship with the Community James Hargest, like all schools, works with the community in a variety of ways. We are justifiably proud of our open communication and consultation with our parents/caregivers, local businesses, local schools, neighbours, etc and view this facet of the school operations as a particular strength. This enables us to provide an equitable customer-focused service that caters for all our students and their families.
In addition to the standard reporting cycles, parent-teacher interviews, information evenings, interviewing of all applicants for Year 9 intakes, seminars for parents, newsletters, community projects and fundraising etc. we believe we offer unique forms of partnership with our community
Examples of these are:
School Newsletters Our school newsletter is published monthly (usually the first Friday of each month unless school holidays dictate otherwise). You can view our newsletter on this website under General Info/Newsletters. We also have current news available via our Home page under Current Happenings.
The Hargest Centre Our full-size basketball stadium with seating gallery, two smaller gyms, social centre with seating for 180 and fully-serviced kitchen, tennis and netball courts with floodlighting has been identified as one of the best sports facility in Southland.
Out of school hours it is in constant use by a huge number of sports teams and community groups, and is used in the holidays for Holiday Programmes, conferences and various National Events.
Parent Teacher Association An active Parent-Teacher Association makes an important contribution to the development of the school. Parents are encouraged and very welcome to join this group and become involved in activities which interest them. They run the Second Hand Uniform Shop. Meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every month.
Hargest Community Childcare Centre Inc Quality childcare is provided on site for 21 children of staff, students and the wider community, from 8 - 5pm weekdays.
The structure of the Management Board is designed to give all user groups an input in the decision-making process.
Community Consultation Every year parents are consulted on the subjects available for year 11-13 students when they attend the Senior Subject Selection Evening. Many surveys are also carried out to allow community input into the decision making process of our school.
Recent surveys:
