Chemistry

Welcome to James Hargest Chemistry

The study of chemistry has led to exciting discoveries such as the structure of DNA and the use of semiconductors in electronics. Chemistry is the study of the substances that make up the universe and the changes that these substances can undergo.

Year 12 Chemistry

Students enjoy a hands on approach in Year 12 with a focus on the Chemistry Triangle.  From electroplating to the chemistry of complex ions many practicals are carried out during the year.

The Rule Scholarship for a Y12 student to attend Outward Bound was awarded to Daniel Redmond in 2008.  This scholarship is made available each year to an outstanding Year 12 Chemistry student by Mr Clive Rule in memory of his wife Frances, who taught at James Hargest College.

Year 13 Chemistry

Students have enjoyed undertaking an independent investigation again this year.  With some very interesting projects being undertaken.  We have been recording some of the experiments and demonstrations carried out on video this year.

Another highlight is the annual Y13 wine-making venture.  This has been a successful venture this year.  We may have some budding vintners amongst us.

Scholarship

Tutorials for Scholarship in Chemistry are run from the start of term 2.  This year the scholarship students went to Otago University for a day with Chemistry Department working on Transition Metal Chemistry and Organic Chemical Synthesis.  They finished the day at the Otago Museum for the Chemistry Quiz Evening.  A great day all round for those students.

We also invited Dr Suzanne Boniface from Victoria University to run a scholarship workshop for the students one weekend in 2009.  That was well supported by our students and it was good to see some students there from other schools as well.

Australian Chemistry Competition

A small number of students sat the Australian Chemistry Competition in 2009, all of them gained at least a credit.  Two high distinctions were awarded to Michael Adam and Daniel Redmond.
