James Hargest College’s top chess players have made all the right moves to create Southland history.
Charlie Samson, Finn Holden and Ted Nguyen upset predictions to finish second in the year 7-8 intermediate division of the New Zealand Schools’ Chess Championships in Auckland.
The trio, joined by Ted’s younger sister, Nina (Waihopai School), became the first Southland school to be placed in the top three in either the junior, intermediate or senior grades of the annual Chess Power Championships.
The championships included team and individual events and attracted the top 200-plus school players in New Zealand.
Finn, Ted and Nina also received Excellence and Distinction individual certificates for being in the top 10 per cent of all players at the championships.
James Hargest qualified for the national final after winning two interschool events in Southland.
Thanks to Mr and Mrs Holden for sponsoring the team’s entry for the tournament.
