Jenny McDonald Hockey Tournament

The James Hargest First XI Girls’ Hockey team had great success at the recent Jenny McDonald Hockey Tournament in Cromwell during Secondary Schools’ Tournament week.  After losing their opening game 1-5 to Ashburton College, which could have easily been put down to the team not adjusting well to the sand surface, the team came back to remain unbeaten for the  remainder of the tournament. The road to the finals was tough as both the quarter-final and semi-final were played in Golden goal, extra time. Emma Ryan and Marcelle Fetolofai were the golden goal scorers in each game, respectively, which progressed the team to the finals. The opposition in the finals was Ashburton College. This time Hargest was well prepared, despite illness affecting some team members, the team fought a hard battle and won the final 3-1. Most Valuable Player of the tournament was Bailey Bishop who played outstandingly on defence and supported the new players to the team especially Taylor Martin who was playing her first season as goalie. Winning this tournament now promotes the team to the Audrey Timlins Tournament for 2016. A big thank you to the parents for their support throughout the season and a special thank you to Wendy Ryan who travelled daily to support the team in a co-coaching role along side coach Allison Bishop. Thank you also to Nicola McLeish for her wonderful management of the team during a very busy season. We farewell Maxzara Steedman, Claudia Trotter, Caroline Santos-O’Connell, Kennedy Sinclair and Jane Wallace who have been members of the 1st XI team for several years and deserve to leave with a Gold Medal.
