New Zealand Secondary Schools Teams Tennis Championship

James Hargest College has etched its name into the Southland tennis history books.

Halle Faherty, Emma White, Finn Holden and Ben Clixby became the first Invercargill high school team to make the New Zealand Secondary Schools Teams Tennis Championship final in the event's 26-year history.

The quartet played in the mixed grade teams tournament in Christchurch, finishing fifth after a fine campaign that also saw them easily win the Southland schools event and then upset predictions to finish second in the South Island championship in Timaru.

In the national final, they lost to the second and third seeds St Andrew’s College, from Christchurch, and Macleans College, Auckland, by six matches to nil. But they beat Hawera High School, from Taranaki, 6-0 and edged St Paul’s Collegiate, from Hamilton, in a tie that could not be fully completed because of rain.

The James Hargest team showed one change from that which played in the South Island final, with Ben Clixby replacing the unavailable Ben Wylie. The New Zealand schools final also involved the top boys and girls teams.
