Te Matatini: National Kapa Haka Festival 2019

Te Matatini: National Kapa Haka Festival 2019

After 12 months of fundraising, 18 members of the Hemi Hakena Kapa Group and 5 adults traveled to Wellington on 19 February to attend the Te Matatini Festival which was held at the Westpac Stadium. We were among more than 60,000 people who attended over four days to watch 46 of the best kapa haka groups from around New Zealand and Australia. We were privileged to stay at the same camp as one of the finalist groups, Te Pou o Mangataawhiri who allowed us to watch them practice. It was an unforgettable experience! Other highlights were a haka powhiri welcoming us to the Beehive and being hosted in the historical Maori Affairs Committee room surrounded by taonga including a replica of the Treaty of Waitangi and Dame Whina Cooper’s korowai, a tour of the incredible Mahuki Innovation Hub at Te Papa and visiting the Terracotta Warriors exhibition. We are looking forward to another trip in 2021 to the next Te Matatini Festival to be held in Auckland.
