A team of four boys (three from JHC) completed the 6+6 Maxis Adventure Race in the weekend. They came 1st in the School Team section and 11th overall out of 47 teams. The race was a gruelling two day event and included twelve hours of running, trekking, biking, orienteering and kayaking in weather that ranged from sun, wind, rain and hail at times.
This year has been a very busy one for the Adventure Racing Squad. This year’s events included the 12 hour South Island Adventure Race near Cromwell, and the 6 hour Macpac Hillary Challenge outside of Geraldine. Hargest entered two teams of 4 in the South Island Adventure Race, and made a commendable effort, despite being hampered by injuries including a broken wrist. Both teams worked together towards the end of the race to get each other across the line. The event included orienteering on foot, mountain biking, abseiling and kayaking. This was a challenging event set in steep terrain, which pushed both teams physically and psychologically. The 6 hour Macpac Hillary Challenge was entered with one team of 8 students and included running and mountain biking. This event was also very challenging, but Hargest finished with favourable results. Thank you to Waine Harding, Team Manager, who got us through both events, and did lots of work behind the scenes to make the transition points seamless.
