Art

Welcome to the James Hargest College Visual Arts department. We provide students with state of the art facilities, a design suite, access to colour printing within the department and teaching staff as practising artists.

The department is a vibrant stimulating physical and exciting place on both sites. The Senior Campus reflects the schools commitment to ensuring the very best in facilities are provided to students and the New Technology Suite on the Junior Site parallels this by providing students there with state of the art facilities.

We have a strong ethic to ensure that as many students as possible experience success. As a department we are committed to fostering the development of our learners. It is our aim to ensure that where ever possible each and every student achieves.

Art Department report 2017

2017 has been another great year for the Visual Arts Department. We welcomed Ms Darmody to the Art Staff and students have benefitted from her expertise in Photography and Design. Students have exhibited in the H&J Smiths Art Exhibition – Hamish Beadle won First place in the Exhibition for his Printmaking board  and Elise Robson, Cilla Tomlinson, Bree-Zahn McDougall and Brandy Brown were all exhibitors. Pete Wiwitawan gained a Scholarship in NCEA Photography and Laura Wallace won the Student Award of $500 at the ILT Art Awards in July. Mrs Pannett and Ms Darmody’s Year 9 Classes were Winners and runners up in the Polyfest Art competition and won $100 for their prize.

Printmaking is the growing subject in our Department and we now have 15 Printmakers at Level 2 and 7 at Level 3. The work has been innovative and experimental and these students have set the bench mark for the next generation. The External Folios have been marked and once again the standard of work from James Hargest College students is outstanding. Photography continues to be a great option for students looking at a digital media pathway and we have had growth in this area as well.

Mrs Pannett, Ms Darmody and Mrs Beadle are very pleased with the outcomes the students have produced this year and we look forward to seeing you all next year!
