Being a club member entitles you paddle whenever you like (depending on shared waka availability), to use all the club equipment and be kept up to date with club news.

As a TAAKWAT member you are part of an enthusiastic colourful club of keen paddlers of all ages, sizes and skill levels.

Your benefits as a TAAKWAT member: ​

• *affiliation with Waka Ama NZ (required for participation in local and national Waka Ama races)

Training days/times

Club training will be Sunday 11am, this includes all club members and potential new members.

Ideally teams of 6+ members can self organise and elect to regularly train together (weekly) at times that suit their team. We will work with teams to provide supervision and coaching including steering training with a view to teams becoming self-sufficient.

Training for rangatahi will be after school 1 day per week with the day and time being determined based on majority of responses. For teams who are committed, training times can be coordinated between the team and coaches.

Where

On-water training will take place at the Oreti river, launcing from the riverside at Invercargill Rowing Club, Sandy Point.

Ki Uta Ki Tai Waka Challenge to be held at the Marakura Yacht Club, Te Anau on Saturday 25th October 2025. Ki Uta Ki Tai Waka Challenge is run annually on the beautiful Lake Te Anau and is intended to be a fun but competitive event to support whānau hauora and wellbeing through waka ama.

Ki Uta Ki Tai offers mid to longer distance races for rangatahi and pākeke over the day.  The event is a full day of fun racing, kai, coffee, health promotion andon shore activities for whānau. 

Formal calls for entry will be sent out when we know more, for now, please indicate whether you are, or might, be interested.

This year the South Island regional sprints will be held at the picturesque Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel on the 6th of December.  This is the first time waka ama has been held here, but many of you will be aware that the site is perfectly set up for competitiors and supporters alike.

Races will include 250m, 500m, 1000m and 1500m (with turns)
