While Covid-19 brought upset to many sports Hargest entered three teams in the Southland Secondary Schools’ Competition. Our 1st XI Girls, 1st XI Boys and Mixed teams had a great season.
Throughout the Southland wide school competition the girls fought hard throughout some challenging games against Southland Girls’ High, St Peter’s College and Central Southland, in the end placing 4th. From the great performance of our 2019 1st XI, the 2020 team were placed in the top twelve South Island teams for this year’s tournament week. Heading away to Christchurch, the girls were up for the big challenge ahead. While playing for the week the girls always went out on the turf with a fighting spirit, allowing them to build a strong team bond on and off the turf. As well as this we all learnt so much about our own hockey as well as the team’s. We are very thankful for the opportunity we were given to be able to play in a top tier tournament and we have taken so much from it.
The Boys 1st XI fielded a young and enthusiastic team that developed as the season progressed. After a slow start,
the team found its sense of “team” and strung together a number of impressive results. The highlight of the season came in the school interchange against Taieri High School. The boys got out to a fast 2-0 start only for Taieri to equalise just on half time. A seesaw second half saw Hargest prevail 3-2 in arguably their best game of the season. The team were grateful to have had two excellent coaches in David and Graham Balfour whose experience was instrumental in the development of the team. They are looking forward to the 2021 season.
The Mixed team played very well and improved as the season developed. They made the final of the Mixed Grade B competition and finished second, missing out in the final to Central Southland College.
Everyone is looking forward to a better 2021 season.
